Wrongful Convictions
James Lockyer
Wrongful convictions have become all too commonplace. Who is not familiar with the names Donald Marshall, Guy Paul Morin, David Milgaard and Stephen Truscott? This lecture will look at some of these cases to identify and consider common causes for wrongful convictions.
James Lockyer, the pre-eminent wrongful conviction lawyer in Canada, has successfully represented each of the men referred to above and countless more. He is the founding director of the Association of the Wrongfully Convicted and was the recipient of the Criminal Justice Award (the G. Arthur Martin Medal) and the John Howard Society of Ontario Award for Distinguished Humanitarian Service.
Sept. 23
Fractals in Our World
Kevin Hare
Fractals, irregular but repeating shapes, can be found everywhere... snowflakes, the stock market, craggy mountains, heart attacks, cloud formations, stalks of broccoli, coastlines, blood vessels, ferns and tree limbs. Learn the history of fractals along with their remarkably diverse (and sometimes strange) applications in areas such as medical innovations, super-cell storms, finger print identification, movie special effects, super-water-repellency and more.
Kevin Hare, PhD, Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo in the Department of Pure Mathematics, has a primary interest in computational number theory but also has interests in fractal geometry and ergodic theory.
Sept. 30
Arctic Sovereignty
Shelagh Grant
Starting with definitions of ‘Arctic’ and ‘Sovereignty’ as they pertain to the evolution of international law, this lecture will outline the history of Arctic Sovereignty in North America and conclude with how Canada may risk losing control over its Arctic waters under the current government plan.
Shelagh Grant is an adjunct professor in the Canadian Studies Program and a research associate of the Frost Centre at Trent University. An award winning author on the history of the Arctic, her most recent book is entitled: Polar Imperative: A History of Arctic Sovereignty in North America.
