This course of 4 lectures explores the frontiers of astronomy and shows how small our bodies and how large our minds are. Subjects include: telescopes, spacecraft, the origin of our own planet earth and solar system and our cosmic neighbours in space; backyard astronomy - practical advice & demonstration on becoming a "naturalist of the night", wherever you live and whatever your background and budget; the sun and stars from birth (gas clouds of space) to death (the bizarre state of white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes); and looking back in time at the birth and evolution of galaxies and the universe.

This one-day seminar, including lunch, provides an outlook into the upcoming 2001 program for Stratford. Arnold Edinborough and Richard Ouzounian, two multi-talented, charming, witty and spontaneous commentators, will give a stimulating, scholarly and informed prologue to Stratford 2001. Mr. Edinborough is an educator, editor, author and dedicated promoter of the Arts in Canada. Mr. Ouzounian is involved with the performing arts as an actor, theatre critic, playwright and artistic director.
DEATH AND LIFE OF OLD CHINA IN NEW CHINA

This course of 5 lectures explores the history and various aspects of life in China. Subjects include: highlights of 4000 years of dynastic history and how colonialists, nationalists, warlords and communists fought for major change; feudal society based on dams and irrigation and the remarkable peasant market system; the family unit - patriarchy and the status of women and a case presentation on an actual divorce court hearing; religion & ideology - confucianism, taoism, buddism and maoism - impact of missions on Chinese society - Christianity under Communism; and the arts - calligraphy, poetry, painting and music.

This course of 5 lectures explores the various aspects of our health system in Canada. Subjects include: the ethics of health care in Canada - are we committed to providing universal health care?; challenging the hopeless prognosis - what hope can we have when the diagnosis is hopeless?; the gene is out of the bottle - how research and technological progress appears to apply to diagnosis and therapy; alzheimer's disease - causes and contributing factors, diagnosis and emerging possibilities for prevention; and traditional and complementary therapies, especially for seniors.
